Set in the seemingly peaceful English village of St. Mary Mead, the story begins with the murder of the detested Colonel Protheroe in the vicar's study, leading the sharp-witted Miss Marple to use her knowledge of human nature to unravel the web of village secrets and identify the killer from a large pool of suspects. The Murder at the Vicarage is a work of detective fiction by the British writer Agatha Christie, first published in the UK by the Collins Crime Club on 20 October 1930 and in the US by Dodd, Mead and Company later in the same year. It is the first novel to feature the character of Miss Marple and her village of St Mary Mead. The character had previously appeared in short stories published in magazines, from December 1927.
