WILL

"There can be no kindness too soon" This podcast was inspired by the greatest resource in education; our students. I found student-voice to be surprisingly absent from educational podcasts, and so "Speaking with Students" was born. My hope is to highlight student experiences and elevate student voices in casual, but meaningful conversations with former students. Engage in the themes and concepts of each episode, driven by the real, live reflections of students.

Anjali: The Thief of Joy

8/20/2023
The Thief of Joy: With the intention of bookending this first season of the show, I am excited to take the opportunity to reflect on all of the conversations in an episode coming up very soon. A finale of sorts for season one. But until then... Anjali joins the podcast. Anjali is a landmark guest for the show. We have never met, at least until we sat down to mine her academic experience for lessons and meaning. But on the college campus we both called home, she was a standout leader. We had a fascinating conversation about both what keeps a student in their shell, and what draws them out… I am really proud of this episode. Thank you so much for listening! Serena: Say Yes!

5/20/2023
Say Yes: As a film and media teacher, I have always enjoyed working with creative students, and I was excited to make student creativity a focus of an episode. Today, Serena joins the podcast. If you had Serena as a student, you would have likely seen her, at some point, carrying around her camera. Serena’s passion for photography was clear to her classmates and to her teachers…and her photography was wonderful. I thought Serena would make an awesome guest because her creativity and her pursuit of photography made her unique. I also thought Serena would be a great guest to discuss the question, “What do creatives need?” You can follow Serena's photography @Serena.Nappa. You won't be disappointed! Greg: Here's Greg with the Weather

4/20/2023
"When you come across a weatherman in white sneakers, be kind." Out in Colorado, surrounded by mountain views, is one of the country's fastest growing cities. And if you ever find yourself in Denver, either permanently or for a brief retreat, you may turn on the news to catch an overview of the day’s weather, and if you were to do that you may hear a phrase that has echoed from east coast to west… “now here’s Greg with the weather.” Today, Greg joins the podcast… Greg turned an early interest in Meteorology into an exciting role as a meteorologist and weatherman for NBC Denver… I am eager to hear about Greg’s academic journey, and ask him about the lessons that stood out along the way. You can follow Greg's meteorology work @9NewsDenver and you can follow weatherman, Greg Perez @GregPerezwx. You won't be disappointed! Thank you so much for listening! Kat: Meet Them Where They Are

3/10/2023
Meet Them Where They Are: Today, Kat joins the podcast… Kat is a dynamic, energetic personality, with a background in both history and psychology. She’s now in graduate school seeking a degree in school counseling, but when Kat and I met, she was a ninth grader in my social studies class. That is right. This makes Kat a landmark guest for me, because she was my student nine years ago during my student teaching experience. And as a ninth grader, she made me laugh, and brought such energy to the classroom.. I knew it would be awesome to talk to her again. I also knew that, with her graduate experience, she would make an excellent guest to expand the conversation we had with Ray from episode five, “What students need” And with that said, welcome back to Speaking with Students... Ray: No Kindness Too Soon

2/10/2023
No Kindness Too Soon: Today, Ray joins the podcast… Ray was a thoughtful student, always looking to have meaningful conversations. Whether it was about content within class, or about conversations beyond the classroom, I appreciated Ray’s insightful presence. And few students kept me laughing as frequently in between classes, as jokes just piled up with ease. I would always look forward to our friendly banter…and today is no exception. A few years after graduation, I learned that Ray, in a roundabout way, began work as a school social worker. An insightful thinker putting his mind to the task of helping others. I am excited to ask Ray about just that - and raise the question, “what do students need?” I think Ray is the perfect student to join me in this conversation…. Thank you so much for listening! Lauren: Reframing Failure

12/10/2022
Reframing Failure: Today, Lauren joins the podcast...Lauren is described by all as a kind and passionate student. Lauren spent her time in high school participating in a number of activities, and then, when in college, Lauren tried and joined a whole host of new activities - I am eager to ask Lauren about what it is like to take that leap... what is it that keeps us from turning our ideas into action? How does the fear of failure impact us? Welcome back to Speaking with Students... Thank you so much for listening! Mitch: The Voice of Reason

11/10/2022
The Voice of Reason: Today, we are joined by Mitch… Mitch was a fierce participant in one of my favorite classes of my career. A thoughtful, engaging, genuine participant who raised the nature of debate in the classroom, and inspired others to get involved. In summary, I view Mitch as the ‘voice of reason’ - a role that any good discussion needs. And so, on today’s podcast episode, I wanted to ask Mitch what value he saw in meaningful conversations in the classroom…and what gestures or actions he saw educators use to elevate those discussions he was so enthusiastically a part of. Colleen: The Go-To Student

10/10/2022
The Go-To: Today, we speak with Colleen… a perennial powerhouse in the arts program, and a thoughtful, successful student academically. I worked closely with Colleen on a number of important projects in high school, and had the opportunity to get to know her rather well. Colleen was the ‘go - to student’ - always dependable and responsible. I even called her “The Hammer” because of her ability to organize classmates and lead others effectively. I wanted to ask Colleen what it was like to be responsible for a lot in high school? What was it like to be expected to get things done? Knowing Colleen, however, I am sure we will end up talking about so more. Welcome back to Speaking with Students… Thank you so much for listening! Anthony: The Spotlight

9/10/2022
The Spotlight: Speaking with Students kicks off with inaugural guest, Anthony, as I hope to get his perspective on what it is like to step into the spotlight at such a young age. Anthony was a wonderful student from the first few years of my teaching career, and a student I still stay in close contact with years after his graduation. When conceiving this podcast, I immediately thought of Anthony, and about the opportunity to ask him questions we'd never really discussed at length. I am eager to hear about the ups and downs of a ubiquitous leader. What is it like to grow in the spotlight throughout high school? Thank you so much for listening!
