The Holy Spirit is not a force or feeling—He is a Person. And because He loves us deeply and desires our hearts, we can grieve Him. How? Through sin and by conforming to the ways of the world. We must remember: the Holy Spirit is also God—holy and pure—and He does not overlook sin. So let us examine our hearts, turn from sin with genuine repentance, and humbly ask Him to fill us once more.

Today’s sermon, brings us to James 1:19-21, a crash course on character. James has been consistently firing massively important subjects at us so far in this series, and today is no exception. Again, James challenges us as believers to put feet to our faith and prove its authenticity through how we live. We aren’t saved to be dormant, we are saved to produce fruit! Character is a great indication of the fruit in our lives. Our character is best seen through how we listen, how we speak and how we address our anger. With clarity, James teaches we must be slow to speak and quick to hear - how often do we live like this command is reversed? We must TRASH our sin, and put on the Word of God. But if we want to do that, what anger needs to stop? What words need to stop? And what listening needs to start?

Freedom is a major focus in our world today—but today, we turn our attention to a greater, deeper kind of freedom. True freedom is found where the Spirit of the Lord is. The gospel of Jesus Christ offers a freedom that surpasses every earthly limitation. Let us pray that the veil would be lifted from our hearts, so we may behold the glory of God. In every question, in every struggle, the answer is Jesus.

Freedom is a major focus in our world today—but today, we turn our attention to a greater, deeper kind of freedom. True freedom is found where the Spirit of the Lord is. Christianity is shown in media as a source of hate and bigotry - but for this reason, God has given us His Word so we can cleanse ourselves of what is untrue. Today in James 1:16-18, we are called to not be deceived and to renew our minds of what is actually true. Our God is good, generous, reliable, faithful, truthful and unstoppable. All good things come from Him! Including every good thing we have on earth and the blessing of salvation through Jesus - the greatest gift. Our Father of Lights is unchanging, in the midst of a confused and ever-changing world. In love today, James reminds us what kind of God we serve.
