Lived Experience as Queer Folk with Disability
4/27/2025
On this show:We reflected on how collective efforts can lead to enriched queer community within regional areas.Noted that the previous day had been International Day of Lesbian Visibility; and having unintentionally included some (probably also unintentional) exclusive language taken from a prime explanatory website, took some time to reflect on the intersectional gender nature of being a lesbian.Madison, Atlas and our guest Lunar shared their lived experiences of being queer folk with disability, living in a queerphobic and ableist society. Reflections includedhow being queer and disabled can be conjoined, and then judged, by ableist people.the hazards of queer disable persons internalising the judgements of others.how ableist behaviour is generally considered unacceptable, but yet it persists.visable and invisable disability, and how attitudes toward them can differ. How pride in oneself as a queer person with lived experience in disability actually adds to the inherent value we already have, as people who exist in the world.Lunar shared some of her poetry; The Battle Within, and Gaze in the Mirror. We ruminated a little on the expense of coffee under late stage capitalism (and why some spoons have holes in them).Community Links:TGD Bookclub, 10 May, 1 - 2:30pm, Free Event, Thorne Harbour Health Building 200 Hoddle St, Abbottsford; and online.Frooty Loops Meetup, 6 - 9pm, Every Second Sunday, Free Event, Little Foot Bar, 223 Barkly St, Footscray.Identity Test, A Trans Existential Drama and Caberet, at Butterfly Club, 5 Carson Place, Melbourne CBD. 7pm, 28th April to 3rd May; Tickets $39 standard, $35 concession.Queer Multicultural Carnival, 7th June, 10am - 6pm. 4/20/2025
On this episode:We heard an extract of 3CR's podcast series 'Queer Histories, Queer Futures'; where Richard Watts describes his past as a 'queer punk', and how this spurred him to create the Naarm based queer punk zine 'Burning Times' in 1995.We discussed with Jackie Turner, of the Trans Justice Project, their campaign calling on Federal election candidates to make a public commitment toprotect trans youth from attacks on their health care, make trans healthcare accessible and affordable for everyone who needs it,support reforms that give trans people the same rights and protections as everyone else andinvest in trans lives by combatting homelessness, poverty, and unemployment.

In this episode:We were joined by James Houghton of Thorne Harbour Health, on behalf of the ReWired program; a free group support program for gay, bi+, and queer men (cis and trans) who want to change their methamphetamine use and manage their mental health. We heard the perspectives of some patrons of the launch of the Wicked Women Reboot photographic exhibition. Having on previous episodes featured the event organisers, the photographers and the photographic models during the photo shoot; we try to complete the loop by listening to the view of the queer folk who now attend the event and appreciate the work. This was followed by the studio panel reflecting on some of the insights that these patrons shared. The panel discussed with James the importance of grouping together as fellow queers to help each other in times of strife; using the James' experience as a co-ordinator of the ReWired program as an excellent example.

Atlas interviews attendees of the re-launch of the Affirmation Station, including Transgender Victoria's CEO Son Vivienne.Nimble shared with the team their experiences as a participant in the Key Change Choir. We listened and reflected on the thoughts shared by Trans activist Bee, at the Trans Day of Visibility Rally; about the dispicable treatment of many Trans migrant sex workers in recent times by Federal authorities.
3CR Trans Day of Audibility Special
3/30/2025
In this episode:We took some time to wonder at the fantastic programming that had proceeded the show, by a range of trans, gender diverse and non-binary talent, as part of 3CR's Trans Day of Audibility.Madison and Atlas reflected on the nature of voice, including Madison's comfort with the low voice that 30 years of testosterone will give a trans woman prior to going on HRT, and the wonderful voice change experienced by many trans masc persons as proceed with taking 'T'.We listened to a variety of clips taken from previous episodes of Queering the Air, where TGDNB activists, performers, writers and other community members have mused on the nature of 'Trans Visibility / Audibility; being seen and heard. Then, Madison, Atlas and Oscar continued the discussion on the importance of being seen and heard; reflecting on the many inspiring points raised by community members in the clips we played.

A Sad Farewell to Sasja and Seena
3/16/2025
On today’s session, Madison Moffat shared some very sad news regarding the Queering The Air team; purely coincidentally, both Sasja Sydek and Seena Katayama are departing from 3CR. Seena has found an amazing career opportunity elsewhere in the media industry that sadly requires her to only perform such work with her new employer. Sasja has been a mainstay of Queering The Air. For a significant period she held the show up on her own while working hard to develop a team. Sasja has decided to sharpen her focus on other obligations, and so departs QTA following an amazing contribution. She will be sorely missed here at Queering The Air; it simply will not the same show without her. This episode focusses on some of the work that Seena and Sasja has performed in recent times, to showcase the value they gave to the program, before wishing them every success. We also hear again from Stacey Stokes about some of the experiences of queer people within the incarceration system, by way of introducing a new spoken word event, featuring those voices, to be held at the Affirmation Station in the near future (awaiting the AF's moving and settling into their new premises).Community Links:TGV and Sephora, Classes for Confidence [in makeup and beauty], Sephora at Melbourne Central, Cnr LaTrobe and Swanston Streets, Melbourne. Queer Iftars 2025 by Queer Muslim Naarm
2/22/2025
We were excited to welcome both co-founders of Queer Muslim Naarm, Sasja Sÿdek and Abdulrahman Katamish, known as Boudie. They shared insights about the upcoming Queer Iftars as Ramadan approached. With the holy month just around the corner, they had been actively working to secure funding, venues, and catering for these special queer community Iftar events throughout the month. This year marked their second time organising these meaningful gatherings. During the episode, listeners learned about the motivations that inspired them to persist in hosting these Iftars, along with some fun and intriguing facts about Queer Muslim Naarm and the significance of this once-a-year event. We also discussed the various organisations that had shown their support and why their backing was so important, as well as how they, in turn, supported other organisations in leading and creating more queer Iftars during the Ramadan period. It was an engaging conversation that shed light on the vibrant and essential work they they were doing! Peter Dutton Voting Patterns vs Trans Politics | Queer Histories, Queer Futures Launch | Telling It With Pride Showcase | No Racism in Pride Community Panel
2/8/2025
We are understandably concerned about what we see happening in the United States of America, and feel solidarity for our queer comrades in that country. However, on this Sunday's Queering The Air, Madison Moffat will ponder: to what extent are we aware of the political threats at home, as presented by the stance of our own main conservative political party?Parliamentary voting patterns of the current Federal Opposition Leader will be discussed, in an effort to fairly assess what it may mean for queer folk if our own Liberal Party of Australia was to regain power at the next election, to be held on 17th May 2025 at the latest. Also:Queer public speaking showcased via the TIPS program, reflections of the speakers of No Racism In Pride, and gathering to celebrate the launch of the Queer Histories Queer Futures podcast.Songs: John Wayne Is Big Leggy, Haysi FantayzeeYouth, Soft CellCommunity:LGBTIQA+ Speakers Bureau: pridecentre.org.au/speakers-bureau/Queer Histories, Queer Futures Podcast: 3cr.org.au/queerhistoriesqueerfutures
