417. Natchez Indians

6/27/2025
In 1682, Robert de La Salle embarked on an expedition to navigate the Mississippi River from its northern source near the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. During this expedition, La Salle and his party constructed a small fort along the Big Muddy called Fort Prud'homme in West Tennessee. Thereafter, he ultimately reached the mouth of the Mississippi, where he formally claimed the vast River Valley territory for France, naming it La Louisiane or Louisiana, in honor of Saint Louis and King Louis the Fourteenth. La Salle also encountered various Native American tribes along his journey, including the Natchez, whose contentious relationship with the French over the ensuing decades led to a dramatic climax in 1729; highlighting the complex interactions between European adventurers and Native American populations during this period of exploration and colonization. One of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era, he played a leading part in English colonization of North America and helped defend England against the Spanish Armada. He was the younger half-brother of North American explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of adventurer Sir Richard Grenville. In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in the New World and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to find it, publishing an account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". The defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 brought fame, both for England and Queen Elizabeth I, and greatly affected the future development of North America. Europe was stunned that such a small island nation had successfully defended itself against such a major aggressor and foreign diplomats began to court England as a possible ally. Elizabeth's popularity soared. The impact of the victory for the nation's self-confidence and the future of North American exploration and colonization cannot be overestimated. England’s success was celebrated in all manners of ways. Songs were written, medals struck, portraits painted and prints published.
