In 1608, Samuel Champlain took some colonists up the great River St. Lawrence to establish a new settlement and fur trading post. He founded France's first permanent Canadian colony, which he named Quebec—an indigenous word meaning: where the river narrows. This strategic location was at the foot of a great rocky cape on the north shore, which formed a natural fortress barring the way upstream to the interior. E161. New France’s government under the French Crown consisted of a Sovereign Council consisting of three major officials: a Governor General, an Intendant and a Bishop, and a number of minor officials, including five councilors, an attorney-general and a clerk. In the spring of 1605, France’s St. Croix settlement was moved to a new site across the Bay of Fundy, on the shore of the Annapolis Basin, an inlet in western Nova Scotia. Here at Port Royal, France's most successful colony to date was established. The general area came to be known as Acadia. New France’s fourth Intendant, Jacques Duchesneau de la Doussinière et d'Ambault, chevalier (1631-1696), held the position from 1675 to 1682. His term was marked by a multitude of quarrels with Governor Frontenac. At its peak around 1712, New France was a vast territory in North America that stretched from Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains and from Hudson Bay down to the Gulf of America. This immense territory was divided into five main colonies: Canada, Acadia, Newfoundland, Hudson Bay, and Louisiana—encompassing the vast interior of today’s United States, including the Mississippi River valley.
