English statesman, author, soldier, explorer, and a favorite courtier of England's Tudor Queen Elizabeth the First, Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) was one of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era. He played a leading part in English colonization of North America and helped defend England against the Spanish Armada. He was the younger half-brother of North American explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of adventurer Sir Richard Grenville. CODEX 4.14 Common Sense by Thomas Paine (conclusion)

4/14/2026
Published as a 47-page pamphlet in colonial America on January 10, 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. The elegantly plain and persuasive language that Thomas Paine used touched the hearts and minds of the average American and was the first work to openly ask for political freedom and independence from Great Britain. Paine’s powerful words came to symbolize the spirit of the Revolution itself. General George Washington had it read to his troops. https://amzn.to/3MHAIYrhttps://amzn.to/3MKX77bhttps://amzn.to/3MCaFC2https://amzn.to/4s3qxOg ENJOY Ad-Free content, Bonus episodes, and Extra materials when joining our growing community on https://patreon.com/markvinet SUPPORT this channel by purchasing any product on Amazon using this FREE entry LINK https://amzn.to/3POlrUD (Amazon gives us credit at NO extra charge to you). https://parthenonpodcast.com/historical-jesushttps://youtube.com/c/TIMELINE_MarkVinethttps://markvinet.com/podcasthttps://www.facebook.com/mark.vinet.9https://twitter.com/MarkVinet_HNAhttps://www.instagram.com/denarynovelshttps://amzn.to/3k8qrGM Audio credits: Common Sense—The Origin and Design of Government by Thomas Paine, audio recording read by Walter Dixon (Public Domain 2011 Gildan Media). Popham Colony, Maine

4/13/2026
The Plymouth Company was chartered by King James in 1606 with responsibility for colonizing the northern east coast of America. The merchants agreed to finance the settlers’ trip in return for repayment of their expenses plus interest out of the profits made. The Plymouth Company established the Popham Colony, in present-day Maine, the northern answer to the previously discussed Jamestown Colony, founded by the Virginia Company of London. The Popham Colony was named for its chief investor and Lord Chief Justice of England Sir John Popham who presided over the trials of Sir Walter Raleigh and the conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot, including Guy Fawkes.
