Artspeak Radio with Lori Buntin and Jamil Lee

11/10/2025
Artspeak Radio, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, 9am -10am CST, 90.1fm KKFI Kansas City Community Radio, streaming live audio www.kkfi.org Producer/host Maria Vasquez Boyd welcomes artists Lori Buntin and Jamil Lee. LORI BUNTIN (she/her/hers) is a multi-media artist, drawing from urban spaces and rural landscapes, social issues, and philosophy to guide her artistic output. Observing color, light, and form is what informs the subjects and compositions of her paintings. Pondering social and environmental issues, along with her frequent walkabouts in the urban core, collecting found objects, inform her mixed media work. These treks also reveal many of the subjects and compositions that end up in her paintings. Lori has worked in various realms of the fine and commercial art world. A custom picture framer since college days, practicing professionally to the present. She has produced many commissioned paintings, mixed media awards, worked as a muralists's assistant, managed a production crew in the hospitality industry, and created and fabricated multiple two- and three- dimensional works for interior public and private spaces. She has taught introductory drawing and painting at the college level, as well as in her private studio over the years. Her paintings and other artworks are in homes and collections across the country. Currently, Lori is focusing solely on her studio work in her space at the Livestock Exchange Building in Kansas City's West Bottoms. The museum was founded in late 2023. Since our start we have strived to be a great museum that has intimate settings allowing our guest and patrons to meet the artist though engaging shows and artist talks. With the intent of bringing African American art to the forefront. All while raising the next generation of African American artists to do significant things in the Kansas City area. We have already started some amazing indeavors here in the Kansas City area with our partners such as the ImPulse Gallery that is owned by the Black Economic Union and Nikki Gibson State Farm in developing pop-up miniature exhibits that last for three 30 days. We have helped over 30 plus artists gain exposure to corporate entities and the general public they would not have other wise known about. We have also been able to independently teach youth through our Spark program. Supporting Positive Artistic Resilient Kids. Through our program we have been able to help young artists in foundational art study and at the end of the program we give the kids their first art show. This allows the children to gain confidence and allows the process of learning how to conduct yourself properly and professionally as an artist. Although we thoroughly enjoy doing pop-ups we will never stop doing what brought us to the table. We do however see the need to be more unique and creative in our endeavors. We don’t want to be just regulated to doing shows on the weekend and we do want people to visit us while still maintaining a pop-up presence. We are currently looking...

Artspeak Radio with Third Pine Collective and No Divide KC

11/3/2025
Artspeak Radio, Wednesday, November 5, 2025, 9am -10am CST, 90.1fm KKFI Kansas City Community Radio, streaming live audio www.kkfi.org Producer/host Maria Vasquez Boyd welcomes Xiao Faria daCunha & Chaneryna Thac with Third Pine Collective and Lindsay Kinney Associate Director with No Divide KC. XIAO FARIA daCUNHA & CHANERYNA THAC- Third Pine Collective, Kansas City’s first-of-its-kind AANHPI labor-sharing artist collective, announces its official launch on September 24, 2025. Spearheaded by Kansas City-based artist, curator, and independent art writer Xiao Faria daCunha, KCAI alum and multi-media artist Chaneryna Thach, and local creative enthusiasts Alicia, Tomomi, and Emi Suenaga, Third Pine Collective aims to elevate AANHPI visual artists and small businesses in different career stages by significantly expanding their reach, capacity, and potential through labor-sharing between members. “It is still very challenging for AANHPI artists, especially working-class and self-taught artists, to navigate through the art scene where Asian folks remain under-represented and disconnected. By coming together as a collective, we can amplify our voices and gain more visibility without draining our capacity. At Third Pine, we want to make sure members have this connective space to collaborate, brainstorm, imagine, experiment, and communicate, so we can all grow together,” said Tomomi Suenaga Summers, Chief Strategy Officer of Third Pine Collective. Formerly Third Pine Gallery, the project transformed from a floating gallery concept created by the Suenaga Family in early 2025, which debuted during the “Art of Being AANHPI” festival at Zhou B Art Center in Kansas City on May 31, 2025. Almost four months later, the concept re-emerges as a platform to amplify AANHPI creative voices in Kansas City and beyond via a mutual aid and resource-sharing structure. “I was part of the Third Pine booth back in May, and I immediately felt this concept could have so much potential if it ran as a collective instead of another gallery/curatorial concept. I’ve always enjoyed my experience being involved in labor-sharing collectives in Chicago. Most artists you encounter are going to be working-class artists, many of whom, without formal training on how to approach galleries, apply for art fairs, etc. And we all have our hands full with jobs, family duties, or just life in general. The labor-sharing structure frees everyone from having to do everything themselves. Instead, you have this massive team where each member only handles a small piece in the larger process. Nobody is burned out, and we all benefit from our collective efforts,” said Xiao Faria daCunha, Executive Director of Third Pine Collective. Third Pine Collective is actively seeking community, business, gallery, and organizational partners to collaborate with on programming and core initiatives. The collective is also seeking funding from private and public sources to ensure quality services to its members and the public it engages with. “We are not a non-profit at this point. Instead, it’s just a bunch of like-minded people coming together, helping each other. We aim to make AANHPI voices heard not only in the art world, but in civic engagement, community development, space-building, policymaking, using our art and creativity as the vessel,” said Chaneryna Thach, Director of Member Relations and Program Support at Third Pine Collective. Third Pine Collective is Kansas City’s one and only AANHPI labor-sharing artist collective, aiming to amplify Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander voices in the arts and through art. The collective’s core programming includes member exhibitions, cultural sessions, AANHPI book clubs, film screenings, and seasonal vendor fairs. www.thirdpinecollective.com LINDSAY KINNEY Associate Director No Divide KC’s Alternative Timelines Annual Gala promises an unforgettable evening of celebration and inspiration. Festivities are held in the historic Westside neighborhood, home to many of Kansas City’s Latinx residents. It began in the classrooms of the Mattie Rhodes Art Center where children worked on Dia de los Muertos themed projects after school. It was in one of those classrooms that Richard Bay, a local artist and art educator in the Kansas City Public School District, held a discussion night about the holiday where an impressive crowd gathered to learn about its traditional practices. The people’s interest was apparent, as was the need for more space, and thus a gallery was opened next door in order to foster a space for cultural and artistic education. Since then Mattie Rhodes Center has dedicated itself to this idea and hosts a variety of events during Dia de los Muertos, including an altar exhibition made for and by members of the community, cultural workshops and tours, and related celebrations in the streets of the Westside. Altogether, we hope to create an experience that is similar to and honors the traditional celebration of Dia de los Muertos in Mexico. We cherish the connections and collaborations we have made through this event with our community members as well as valued institutions around the city such as the Kansas City Museum in the Northeast, Stonelion Puppets Theater, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The holiday of Dia de los Muertos varies from place to place, from person to person. The holiday originates in Mexico, though it is celebrated in many other countries in different forms. Artspeak Radio with Owens, Brick, Skedel, Griffin, and Marten

9/11/2025
Artspeak Radio, Wednesday, September 17, 2025, 9am -10am CST, 90.1fm KKFI Kansas City Community Radio, streaming live audio www.kkfi.org Producer/host Maria Vasquez Boyd welcomes artists Pierre Owens, DeAnna Skedel, KE Griffin, Anna Marten, and filmmaker Jon Brick. JON BRICK- Experience the magic of Ronzo at an exclusive screening of Jon Brick’s new feature documentary—a lively tribute to the man who turned a small Southern town into a creative mecca. Ronzo is a witty, heartfelt documentary about Ron Shapiro — affectionately known as Ronzo — who turned Oxford, Mississippi, from a conservative college town into an unlikely cultural mecca. His Hoka Theater became the beating heart of the town’s creative underground — a sanctuary for misfits where college students mingled with literary giants like Willie Morris, John Grisham, and Barry Hannah. The Hoka hosted music, indie films, plays, and midnight adult film screenings, and drew counterculture icons like Abbie Hoffman, Allen Ginsberg and Hunter S. Thompson. It also helped launch the careers of artists and musicians, including members of Wilco, North Mississippi Allstars, and Widespread Panic. Outside the theater, Ronzo stirred up local politics, using wit and empathy to provoke dialogue and bridge divides. His legacy continues through Hoka Days, an annual celebration in his honor, culminating in a lively parade in Oxford. Though Ronzo’s death left a void, his influence remains, reminding us of the power of creativity, inclusion, and the arts in shaping communities. Ronzo’s story is told through the voices of his closest friends and family, including musicians from Wilco, Widespread Panic, and the North Mississippi Allstars; actress Joey Lauren Adams (Chasing Amy); renowned Southern writers; and TV and radio hosts Jim Dees, John T. Edge, Robert Gordon and Tom Franklin — to name a few. The screening is Saturday, September 27th, 7:30pm Grand Avenue Temple 206 E 9th Street KCMO, 64106 Tickets ($15) are available to purchase through the International Documentary Association, the film's fiscal sponsor with this link: https://ronzo.allyrafundraising.com/events/922 If you are unable to attend, we are accepting donations also through the International Documentary Association Fiscal Sponsorship Program: https://ronzo.allyrafundraising.com/ PIERRE OWENS- I’m an artist with Autism who started drawing when I was a young kid. I graduated from Paseo Academy in 2007 as a Creative Writing Major. I found my true calling back in 2009 while I did some job shadowing at AbilityKC. I was diagnosed with Autism at the age of two. Years later, he found my true love for movies. Movies have been a true part of my art. I come up with great movie ideas and create great movie posters for them. I’m an outsider artist with no art school education but has a God-given talent to create such beautiful portraits. The things that inspire me to draw are the people that I met, the places I’ve visited and the movies that I watched. I've done commissioned drawings for people across the country and some from around the world. My drawing style is very traditional and cartoonist-like. I mostly draw from pictures that I look at and from memory as well. Three years after I found my calling in the art world, I met professional artist Wes Benson and he inspired me to go further in my art career. In 2013, I started having my very first art show at his studio at The Bauer. In 2015, I showcased some of my drawings with Charles Mooneyham at an exhibit in St. Louis. In 2016, I presented a special drawing to former KC Mayor Sly James. In 2017, I had my first exhibit at the Bruce R. Watkins Center and it was a success. Months later, I was featured in an interview with former teacher Christopher Ulmer on his page called Special Books by Special Kids when I was showing off my ability to recall any movie release date. Right after that, drawing commissions started pouring in. They couldn’t get enough of my work. In 2022, I had a second...

Artspeak Radio with Fredy and Francisco Gabuardy, & Belger Arts

9/8/2025
Producer/host Maria Vasquez Boyd welcomes artists Francisco and Fredy Gabuardy, Consuelo Cruz Vice President of Marketing and Community Engagement Belger Arts, artists Tyler Suter and Hannah Schelb. FRANCISCO and FREDY GABUARDY- Kansas City-based media artists Francisco Gabuardy and Fredy Gabuardy are identical twins, but their styles are not hard to differentiate. Francisco explores a collection of personally meaningful symbols like spikes and pie graphs, while Fredy is a builder and often includes sculptural elements in his work. Cadejo, their first collaborative exhibition, was four years in the making. It showcases 10 pieces, eight highlighting the push and pull of their unique styles and shared Nicaraguan origins, and two representing their own studio practices. Cadejo refers to a mythical, dog-shaped spirit they grew up hearing stories about. In Central American folklore, it represents "good" and "evil," light and dark. It can protect and attack, lead away from harm or toward danger. They were inspired by the dual nature of cadejo, reflected in their complementary or perhaps, at times, seemingly contradictory styles and approaches. The works, in turn, reflect their relationship as twins, mirroring each other at various points in life and art. For the Gabuardys, the key aspect of cadejo is its mysterious ability to lead. But whether to safety or peril, the artists must keep moving forward. The brothers created the works using a series of self-imposed "rules," game play, and improvisational techniques. Each collaborative effort involved new negotiations and strategies with every action and counteraction. How much space does one occupy? Who gets to enter the conversation, and when? The results are both uncanny collisions and gentlemanly covenants in mixed media, expressing twin communication that goes beyond words. The works are exercises in trust and intention. In this series of collaborations, the artists demonstrate a tenacious investment of energy and time, and an expansive curiosity around process, material, and formalism. The works are packed with personally meaningful symbols, exuding cryptic beauty in their unexpected compositions. The artists invite viewers to approach the works with an open mind, reminding us that these abstractions hold infinite interpretations. They see the pieces as stanzas, sentences, or small thoughts that can serve as starting points for the viewer's own narrative. Artists talk can be viewed here, Unraveling ‘Cadejo: A Twins’ Journey - YouTube www.fredygabuardy.com www.franciscogabuardy.com Kansas City Public Library Central Library 14 W. 10th St. KCMO Guldner Gallery now through September 20 CONSUELO CRUZ, Vice President of Marketing and Community Engagement Belger Arts Belger Arts Residency Programs, Hannah Schelb, Ceramics Artist in Residence, Tyler Suter, Glass Artist in Residence Belger Crane Yard Studios continues to host national and international artists through its Residency program. Her artworks imagine places that are “everywhere and nowhere,” visualizing these shifting yet ever-present dynamics. Grounded in Anishinaabe understandings of space and time, the works in this exhibition reflect on how land carries memories of colonial expansion and violence, as well as Indigenous presence and resistance. Across painting, video, and sculpture, Carlson organizes imagined landscapes around one constant—the horizon. This line is reminiscent of her homelands on Lake Superior. It is also a significant art historical trope that artists have employed to depict territories as vast and vacant, ripe for the taking. Carlson’s prismatic works are not empty: they are densely layered with an abundance of motifs, making reference to the tactics of colonialism as well as her family and peers, Ojibwe culture, and Indigenous sovereignty. Confronting ongoing histories of erasure and dispossession, Carlson proposes that what appears to be lost can be remade, reimagined, or otherwise regained.
